Gum disease is something that can impact just about anyone. In fact, it currently affects millions of people every year and it is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults.

However, a majority of people never even know they have the condition until they notice the symptoms of it such as debilitating pain or even loose teeth.

This is primarily because it can cause relatively few symptoms throughout its early onset stages.

Therefore, you might never even know you have it until its too late. Because of this, you want to be sure to keep up with your oral care and regularly visit the dentist. However, that is not enough if you have gum disease.

In this article, we will be going over some of the different things that will tell you whether or not it is time to visit a periodontist.

When To Visit A Periodontist:

1. Gums Are Swollen.

If you are experiencing extremely swollen gums, you are likely going to be a candidate for visiting a gum specialist. Your gums are not meant to be swollen. Also, if your gums are consistently bleeding as you brush and/or floss your teeth, there is likely something wrong. These are the typical and most prevalent signs that you are dealing with gum disease. Therefore, you want to be sure to be on the lookout for these signs and symptoms.

2. Bad Breath.

Another significant sign that you can look for when you are looking to tell whether or not you might be dealing with gum disease is by checking your breath. If you have bad breath on a consistent basis and you are constantly dealing with an unpleasant odor and taste stemming from your mouth, you will want to get checked. It is very likely that you are dealing with growing bacteria throughout your mouth and into pockets within your gums.

3. Receding Gums.

This is another major sign that you are dealing with gum disease. If you notice that you are experiencing gum recession and that there are deep pockets in between teeth that weren’t there before, you are likely experiencing some form of gum disease and you should get it checked out by a professional.

A periodontist is someone that can really help if you are dealing with gum problems. Unfortunately, a majority of people have never even visited a periodontist specialist in their lifetime. If you are someone over 30 years old and you haven’t ever been to see a periodontist, you will want to schedule an evaluation as soon as you can in order to help get the treatment that you might need to stop gum disease in its tracks.
