What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs when the airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep. This leads to interrupted breathing, snoring, and restless nights. The two main types are:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): Caused by a physical airway blockage.
Central Sleep Apnea: Occurs when the brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
Our Sleep Apnea Treatments
At Shine Dental, we provide personalized care to address sleep apnea effectively:
Oral Appliances
Custom-made dental devices gently reposition the jaw to keep the airway open during sleep. These appliances are comfortable, portable, and non-invasive.
CPAP Referrals
For severe cases, we work with specialists to provide Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, which delivers steady airflow to prevent airway collapse.
Lifestyle Counseling
To complement your treatment, we’ll guide you on lifestyle changes, such as weight management and improved sleep hygiene.

Shine Dental Associates, Long Island’s newest and most technologically advanced dental practice, is proud to offer sleep apnea treatment for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea. Our Board-Certified Periodontist, Vikas Mittle DDS, provides custom-fitted oral appliance therapy for patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
Oral appliance is indicated as a first line treatment for mild to moderate OSA and is safe and effective alternative to CPAP technology.
These dentally- approved appliances reposition the tongue and lower jaw forward during sleep to maintain an open airway. They are custom made, comfortable, easy to wear and non invasive.
It only takes most patients a few nights to get accustomed to it. Compliance to oral appliances are significantly better than patients attempting to use CPAP technology.
There are a plethora of oral appliances that are currently available. Each is unique and has some advantages and disadvantages. Dr. Mittle evaluates each patient for which oral appliance will result in the best outcome for patients.
Dr. Mittle will also monitor the patients treatment progress, make adjustments as needed and send you for a follow up sleep study to ensure the therapy is properly working. Dr. Mittle communicates with the patients physician to ensure best treatment for patients.
Insurance Coverage for Sleep Apnea Treatment
Custom dental appliances for snoring and sleep apnea are covered by most medical insurance companies when accompanied by a medical doctor’s diagnosis of mild to moderate sleep apnea.
Shine Dental Associates accepts medical insurance and as a courtesy will submit medical claims to help minimize any out of pocket expense to you.
With the help of oral appliances patients can hopefully sleep better, increase job performance, increase libido and decrease the risk for car accidents. Treatment of sleep apnea can hopefully decrease the risk for stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart attack and depression.
