It seems that a trend that was made famous by hip hop artists in the 1980’s that is unfortunately making a strong comeback due to celebrities like Madonna, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Beyonce and swimmer Ryan Lochte can cause gum disease.
The problem is that while celebs can get their grills (or grillz) fitted properly the vast majority of people who emulate these stars end up using poorly fitted grills.
As reported in the United Kingdom’s Daily Mail online…
Although grills may initially feel comfortable, ill-fitted grills can wear away at the tooth’s enamel and lead to painful toothaches and even headaches. With long periods of use, badly fitted grills can also permanently moving teeth into a new, unhealthy position.
…ill-fitting grills can cause tooth decay, infection and even movement of the teeth, which could lead to needing braces to realign the teeth.
The clip-on fashion statement can also cause bacteria to build up between teeth, which can lead to infections in both the gums and teeth, which can lead to extensive tooth decay and the onset of gum disease. This could well lead to needing root canals, dental implants, porcelain veneers or other reconstructive dentistry.
Worse still, if the grills are made from poor quality metal, they could well contain substances that are unhealthy and could cause allergic reactions.
Here’s our advice: save your teeth and gums and forgo the desire to don a grill. And, if that desire is so strong that you simply cannot live without this shiny appliance…then at least get your grill fitted properly.
