Levittown, formerly Island Trees, is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, Long Island. It is located between the villages of Hempstead and Farmingdale.
Levittown is the name of seven large suburban housing developments created by William Levitt. Levitt and his company built houses for returning veterans and their families. They were an alternative to trampled city housing and affordable.
The town has population of 51,881 as of 2010. Levitown is one of the firsts and one of the largest mass-produced suburbs. Its so unique that the Smithsonian Institution in Washington wants to put on display an entire house.
